Project Wilgenvrouwen
Since november 2023 - Alchemical & cyclical garden project
Project Wilgenvrouwen is an artistic research project in which we bring together our individual practices through the long-term creation and maintenance of a garden. The garden functions as a living workspace and as a medium for exploring the relationship between art, spirituality, and natural cycles. We approach self-sufficiency as a form of peaceful action: change that arises through concrete, daily practices and through the development of alternative ways of living and creating.

Since November 2023, we have been working together in a garden in Sibbe. What initially was an open field of tall grass has developed into a dynamic ecosystem that confronts us with unpredictability, loss, and regeneration. We experience the garden as an active collaborator that guides the process and challenges us to let go of artistic control, working instead from reciprocity and attentive care.

Within this project, we investigate how an artistic practice can contribute to visualizing and shaping a cyclical approach to life. Our collaboration is characterized by sharing knowledge, jointly developing artisanal and artistic methods, and taking responsibility for each other and the site. By sharing our processes and insights with the public and the surrounding community, we aim to foster support for a shared, caring relationship with both landscape and society.

	THE GARDEN

The garden is not only a location, but an active presence within the practice. It shapes the rhythm of the work through seasons, growth and decay, asking for ongoing attention, care and response. What is made here emerges from physical engagement: tending, harvesting, building, observing and waiting. The garden offers both material and direction, grounding artistic research in daily, embodied actions.

Rather than functioning as a backdrop, the garden continuously influences how decisions are made, how time is structured and how encounters take place. It is a shared field in which artistic, ecological and social processes intertwine. In this sense, the garden becomes a living collaborator — a place where practice is shaped through reciprocity, continuity and listening.

	COLLABORATION

Wilgenvrouwen is a collaboration rooted in embodied practice, care and ongoing dialogue. Two distinct artistic practices meet without merging, forming a shared field in which making, ritual, conversation and physical labour are inseparable. The work unfolds through what is done together: tending, hosting, building, cooking, speaking and listening. These actions are not supportive to the work — they are the work.

Rather than working toward fixed outcomes, the collaboration remains responsive to what is present: the place, the people and the moment. Beatrice brings a focus on holding space, ritual and collective processes, shaping the relational and atmospheric dimension of the practice. Alongside this, the collaboration is grounded in material and organisational gestures that anchor the work in daily life. Through sustained conversation and shared responsibility, Wilgenvrouwen functions as a living, evolving practice — one that grows through trust, difference and shared commitment.

	SHARING & GATHERINGS
The garden comes alive through moments of gathering. Workdays, rituals, seasonal celebrations, shared meals and harvest feasts are integral to the practice, not as side activities but as core artistic gestures. These moments create a rhythm in which making, caring, reflecting and celebrating become intertwined.

By working and eating together, the garden becomes a place of exchange: of knowledge, stories, skills and attention. Each gathering is shaped by the season, the needs of the land and the people present. What emerges is not a fixed format, but a living programme that grows alongside the garden itself.

Through these shared moments, the work is experienced collectively — embodied, situated and relational. They form the entry points into the project, inviting others to step into the garden, to participate, and to become part of its ongoing cycle.

	Zomerweek Schilderen in Frankrijk

	Oogstfeest24.08.2025, Project Wilgenvrouwen, Sibbe

During the harvest gathering in the garden of Project Wilgenvrouwen, visitors were invited to enter the space at a slower pace and to attune to the rhythms of the place. Guests brought an offering for the shared altar beneath the weeping willow, creating a collective focal point shaped by personal gestures, natural materials, and quiet intention. This moment marked a transition from arrival into a more attentive, grounded presence.

From there, everyone was welcomed into the fire circle around the large cauldron of soup. Together, a short moment of breathing and meditation was shared — a pause to settle, to listen, and to arrive fully in the body and in the landscape. The warmth of the fire and the presence of the group created a shared field of stillness before moving into silence.

It was our intention to eat the soup in silence, allowing the meal to become a moment of deep listening and presence. Participants then dispersed throughout different corners of the garden, carrying their bowls with them. In quiet, they experienced what it means to be with the place without words: listening to wind, leaves, soil, and distant sounds, and sensing how stillness can deepen connection. This shared quiet allowed the garden itself to take the lead, offering its textures, scents, and subtle movements as companions.

After this silent meal, the gathering gradually opened into rest, conversation, walking, and shared reflection. Some people lay down, others wandered through the garden, and small groups formed to exchange stories and impressions. The harvest gathering became a space where slowness, nourishment, and presence intertwined — not as an event to be consumed, but as a lived experience of connection with the garden, with one another, and with the cycles that hold both growth and letting go.

	Aardperensoep

Pretzel programma propedeuse - januari 2025As part of Project Wilgenvrouwen, Beatrice Pittman and I led a guest session with first-year art students, exploring how artistic practice can extend beyond conventional formats. Together, we prepared the harvested Jerusalem artichokes from the garden into a communal soup in a large cauldron over an open fire. The activity was framed by a simple altar, and we collectively set the table, creating a shared, attentive space for preparation and nourishment.

The session became both a practical and conceptual exploration: cooking and sharing food as a form of relational, embodied practice, and as a way to reflect on how art can unfold outside traditional gallery or studio settings. By engaging in these tactile acts together — harvesting, cooking over the fire, setting the table, and eating — students experienced art as a process of care, collaboration, and ritual.

The exercise opened a dialogue about the boundaries of artistic practice, inviting participants to consider how simple, shared acts in nature and community can themselves be a form of creative and meaningful expression.

	The Iron Womb

Yule ritual dinner, 22 december 2024 during Yule Festival at Domein de Schans

At the center of this work was the cauldron — the Iron Womb — in which the food was stirred, spiced, and slowly heated. The cauldron functioned as both a practical vessel and a symbolic space: a womb from which warmth, nourishment, and light emerged from darkness. The shared meal became a ritual of transformation, marking the turning point from death to rebirth, from darkness toward returning light.

Sharing food created connection on the most fundamental level. At the table, hierarchies dissolved, and participants met each other simply as human beings. The act of eating — earthy, sensory, and communal — became a spiritual gesture, grounding ritual in everyday embodiment.

This work brought together two worlds that had been growing closer in my practice over the past year: my artistic work and my long-standing involvement with Domein De Schans, where I had been cooking for retreats for the past three years. By bringing my art practice into this context, the ritual dinner became a site where nourishment, ceremony, and artistic expression merged.

The gathering offered a moment to witness the turning of the year and to share warmth, food, and presence in the depths of winter.

	Under the Willow
winter 2024
Energy retreats, turning inward, gathering strength beneath the surface. Bare branches, exposed to wind and storm, embody both vulnerability and resilience, while stillness and silence reflect the seasonal pause. Hidden networks — hollows, deep roots, and enduring tree structures — suggest life that persists even in dormancy, carrying the seeds of renewal.

Exposure and protection, activity and rest, exist in balance. Storms and cold are met with subterranean stability and interconnection, where growth continues unseen. The rhythms of retreat and recuperation reveal how withdrawal, quiet, and grounding prepare for reemergence and regeneration.

Beneath apparent stillness, subtle energies circulate, sustaining life and allowing the quiet, enduring power of winter to transform into new beginnings.
